Mural to be Painted and Reception Re-cap

MURAL TO BE PAINTED

Back in October, a panel of judges selected a mural sketch submitted by Senior Theology Major, Sarah Overdorf, as the winner of our TLM 2011 ILLUMINATION-themed Mural Contest. Her depiction of Job 38 truly illuminated the theological concept. Also accepted as Sarah's senior internship, the mural will not only fulfill her graduation requirements but will also enrich the library experience of those who study and visit the lower level. Sarah plans to spend Spring Break painting the mural. Be sure to keep visiting our blog for updates as well as our lower level to see this piece of art come to life!

PHOTO EXHIBIT RECEPTION

Last Thursday the library hosted a reception for Dr. Wilkinson's macrophotography exhibit "God in the Details." Staff and students were blessed by Dr. Wilkinson's talk regarding the bigness of God, the beauty and detail of his creation, and just his overwhelming glory. Dr. Wilkinson shared stories about his family and how his father encouraged his sons to look under rocks and to pull star fish out of the ocean to examine the wonders of God's world. Thank you's go to Dr. Wilkinson for devoting his time in putting the exhibit together and for speaking.

Guests enjoyed music played by The Skis and were sugared-up by a plethora of oreo cookie packages :)

This macrophotography exhibit was produced as a humble homage to the work and vision of Irwin Moon and the on-going legacy of the Moody Institute of Science. The details of creation reveal not only evidence of intelligent design, but a God who revels in demonstrating His beauty even on a level we fail to see.

Whether or not you agree, tune in to learn more about this important presidency.

Our current display “Student Life from Application to Graduation” showcases the studies, ministry, and social life of early MBI students. The display ranges from applications and classwork, to the ministry of Practical Christian Ministry (PCM), to the fun of socializing, and finally to the accomplishment of graduation. This display hopes to give a general visual overview of the Institute experience of early Moody Bible Institute students.

Please visit the archives on the lower level of the library in the northwest corner.

Have you put the finishing touches on your final projects and research papers? Did you include a works cited or bibliography? If so, the Crowell Library would love to know which resources you used, which you found most helpful, and which subject areas in our library need to be updated! This is one way you can use the work you've already done to improve our library! Feel free to email your list of resources to library@moody.edu.

eBooks

The best place to start searching for eBooks is our online catalog! The catalog acts as a one-stop search to eBooks found on a variety of web-based platforms.

On the Advanced Search page, type in the title or author name of the book for which you seek or alternatively the keyword or subject. Make sure the correct type of search is selected from the drop-down menu. Scroll down to the limits box and choose #13, Digital Library. By setting the limit to the Digital Library, you will eliminate all other types of materials thereby streamlining your search (that means fewer results to sort through!). When the results appear, scroll through to the one that is most relevant to your needs. You can either click on the title to view the full record of the book, which has the link to the resource within it, or you can click the link to the book itself. If you are off campus, you will then have to log in using your MyMoody username and password. Next, you will be directed to the page providing citation information as well as to the full text of the book online.

Welcome Karina Reyes as Curr Lab Technician

The Crowell Library is pleased to announce that Karina Reyes now serves as our new Curriculum Lab Library Technician. Karina received her BA in Family Ministries/Pre-Counseling from MBI in 2007. She recently served as a Library Team Leader at Moody Church where she managed the Book Nook, implemented library circulation procedures, supervised the acquisition of new books and resources and conducted training for new volunteers. She has also served as a Corrections Ministries Chaplain and Ministries Director, a Summer Camp Head Counselor, an Elementary Teacher Assistant and a Youth and Outreach Coordinator. She is detail-oriented and process driven. Please warmly welcome her on board!

Welcome April Nelson as Technical Services Supervisor and TREN!

April Nelson spent 15 years home educating her two daughters, both of whom are now university students. For the past 1 1/2 years she has been the office assistant for a financial representative at Northwestern Mutual in the Loop. She has also spent the past 10 years serving in various areas of ministry at The Moody Church, where her husband Bruce, an MBI alumnus, serves as a pastor.

The Crowell Library is pleased to announce that Jillian Huff joined our team on October 3rd as new Serials Coordinator. While working on her BA in Educational Ministry at Moody from 2007 – 2011, Jillian was employed with us as a Circulation Desk Assistant. She has also worked with Student Development Women’s Ministry May 2010 – May 2011, as Counselor Director Summer 2008 and as a Crisis Pregnancy Volunteer from August 2006 – 2007. Research Tip - Footnote trail

The best place to start is by following the footnote trail of others. If you have used reference books to narrow your topic, look at the works cited bibliography or recommended reading section to see if there are any articles cited by the author of that introductory piece. If so, take down the citation information - author, article title, journal/magazine title, volume/issue number, date - so that you can use it to search for the full text of the article, whether that be found in one of our online resources, in our print library (which we can scan and email to you), or freely available on the internet. If you haven't used reference books, you can still follow the footnote trail left in books and even in other articles.

For example, the bibliography at the end of the "Great Britain: Jewish Refugess," article in the Encyclopedia of the Holocaust, cites this journal article:

Gilbert, Martin. "British Government Policy towards Jewish Refugees: November 1938-September 1939." Yad Vashem Studies 13 (1979): 127-167.

To locate the entire article, you can search by journal title in our A-Z List of Electronic Journals, our online catalog, and if the journal is not found, WorldCat. WorldCat will tell you what other libraries in the area own the issue. You can then submit an interlibrary loan request or visit the library in person. We do not own the physical print nor do we subscribe to the online version of this journal. The best way to obtain access, since this article is a bit dated, would be to submit the ILL request. Joe Cataio, our ILL technician, will have it emailed to you within 2 weeks (but probably sooner).

Food for Fine$
The library collected 51 items during our Food for Fine$ campaign last week. As a result, $66.42 in fines were waived! These canned/boxed goods will be given to the Compassion Ministries of The Moody Church. Thank you so much for your participation!

Out of a Far Country Book Discussion with Authors

Professor Rosie de Rosset will interview and facilitate a question and answer with Christopher Yuan and his mother Angela regarding their book, Out of a Far Country: A Gay’s Son’s Journey to God. A Broken Mother’s Search for Hope in the Crowell Library at 7 p.m on Tuesday 10/25. Christopher is a Moody Bible Institute Undergraduate School adjunct professor and 2005 Moody graduate. Light refreshments will be served and senior communications major Lulu Hé will open the event by playing the guzheng, a Chinese musical instrument. Copies of the book, which will be signed upon request, will be available for purchase. For more information please contact the library.

We were so thrilled to be apart of this special anniversary for the Moody Bible Institute. Documents, art prints, yearbooks, Moody Student newspaper issues, and other Moodyana illustrated some of this rich history that was celebrated.

In celebration of Theological Libraries Month, the Crowell Library will be exhibiting this display on the first floor of the Crowell Library for the rest of October. Come visit!

Amy Fields started working full time for the Crowell Library as Circulation Supervisor on Monday June 20. She most recently worked part time in the Technical Services department as Library Technician and Supervisor. She is responsible for the Circulation Department, which includes providing and supervising customer service and circulation of all library materials to all patrons, supervising student workers, maintaining library records, reserves service, and library accounting (fines, fees and copies, etc.). She will also be continuing her work managing the missions collection of the main stacks and providing support for public services and programming.

Review of yesterday's Story time

The library came alive on Wednesday afternoon with the sounds of 15 children! Moody families visited the Crowell Library Juvenile collection and Curriculum Lab for the National Library Week Story Time.

Their visit began with snacks and coloring. Once everyone was settled on a blanket, they were entertained with 5 stories read by Elementary Education students and library employees. Some of the books read were: The Perfect Nest by Catherine Friend, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff, and Llama Llama Mad at Mama by Anna Dewdney.

After the stories were read, parents and children stayed for games and snacks.

Parents, children and library employees look forward to future story times in the Crowell Library!

Review of last night's Pre-Release Party for Litfin's THE GIFT

Last night over 50 people attended Dr. Bryan Litfin's Pre-Release Party for the second book in his Chiveis trilogy, The Gift. Students, staff, faculty, and the provost were welcomed to the lower level of the library by a slide show of images illustrating the Italian-setting of the novel, which was put together by Crowell Library's Music Library Assistant Jenny Greening. Antonín Dvořák's 1893 New World Symphony set the mood with adventurous crescendos and colorful motifs. In addition to the visual and auditory stimulation, guests' taste buds were enticed by Catering's Italian-inspired spread, including Bruschetta, sparkling white grape juice, polenta with cheese, and potato wedges sprinkled with walnuts and doused with sour cream on top.

At 7pm, Litfin gave some introductory remarks, including welcomes and thank you's. Those in attendence were then shown a trailer about the sequel to The Sword that is available on the book's website: http://www.chiveis.com/ Next he re-capped the premise and basic plot of the trilogy and then proceeded to show through power point the setting, plot, and character of The Gift.

Following this, Dr. Rosalie de Rosset joined the stage and interviewed Litfin, cordially asking literary criticism-type questions. Litfin's answers gave guests a greater understanding and insight as to the themes, purpose, process, and story of the book. The audience was then able to pose questions to the author. These dealt with what types of weapons would be used or introduced and if the reader would be kept abreast of the goings-on in Chiveis. Litfin answered some fully but others he kept a mystery referring those interested to the book for answers.

To end the evening, Litfin read a scene from The Gift in which Teo and Ana have a romantic-type date and in which Teo's position and character are challenged. (You'll have to read the book - no spoilers here!). Finally, everyone was invited to purchase a pre-release copy of the book, as well as The Sword, from LifeWay Christian Store at a discount. Litfin then signed copies and talked with the guests.

Review of last night's Salon du livre

The smells of crepes and sounds of baroque music enticed un-intending and intentional students alike to join the audience of Professor Mocuta's Salon du livre. Whip cream and berries adorned the crepes and café au laits steamed and countered the sweetness of the French dessert.

The library space bustled with talking as the dessert reception grew fuller in anticipation of the night's program. Some ignorant of the event at first scorned the noise, but were seen later indulging in the free dessert. Sugar and caffeine were definitely worth the inconvenience. Most others joined in the festivities, intrigued that the library space could be used in such a way - food and noise and a make-shift amphitheater?!?!

The furniture of the area had indeed been moved in a sort of amphitheater space. The 'stage' figured to the south of the area and featured a writing desk and twin chairs, paintings on easels, still life props, and an adjacent book exhibit.

Professor Mocuta and Theatre Y actors Melissa Hawkins, Kevin Smith and MBI actor Evan Hill joined the throng at 7. Mocuta introduced the Salon historically and also explained how it came to fruition here at MBI during this year's National Library Week celebration. Attendees were given biographies of Salon personalities, the portraits of whom were shown via slides on a screen.

The Salon moved from lecture to the reading of epistolary literature - correspondence written by the Habitués du salon. The letters most resonant were those written by Vincent Van Gogh to Gaugin and to his brother Theo about his art. We listened to Smith give voice to these words of struggle, definition, philosophy, religion, transcendence and art all while looking at the 'Starry Night' and 'The Café' images on a slide.

To close, Smith again impressed the audience with a monologue from András Visky's 'Backborn.' Unfortunately, time was running out and the audience dared not ask too many questions about the piece. Indeed, bewildered and inspired students alike left the library discussing the Salon. For this, it was a success and something to be repeated.

Library staff presented the actors with flowers and gift cards to Open Books. Professor Mocuta received potpourri and stationary.

Another National Library Week Event - Story time!

Children of Moody employees, students, & alumni come join us in the library as Elementary Education majors read some of their favorite stories aloud. Crowell Library staff, including Technical Services Librarian Lori Johnson, has prepared a bulletin board display featuring new children’s books and also an exhibit of Moody Publishers’ children’s books. In addition to Story time, children will be able to participate in a writing activity, coloring pages and a beanbag toss game, as well as treats and give-a-ways. Parents, fellow employees and students come and browse our re-organized picture, chapter and young adult book sections. Library staff will be demonstrating the AccuCut® machine that cuts out letters, numbers and a variety of shapes that can be used for bulletin boards, posters, scrapbooks and many other projects. It will be an opportunity to explore the Curriculum Lab and Juvenile collection to learn and discover more about its treasure trove of resources.

Food for Fines
Beginning on Monday, April 11, you can help yourself and someone else by trading food for fines! MBI’s Crowell Library will remove $5 in fines* for every non-perishable food item donated. Book exhibits on first floor of library
Our library is a treasure trove of fascinating books. The Hidden Gems that will be displayed are some of the most beautiful art and photography books in our library. In addition, the display table will feature a series of guide books to the best items in specific categories such as best books, best paintings, best films, and best classical music.

Create Your Own Story @ Your Library: Come learn how to scrapbook, journal, and research your genealogy and also read fictional stories about these autobiographical creations. Highlights of the exhibit will be items from the archives including personal scrapbooks and Dwight Lyman Moody’s genealogy.

Salon du livre – Monday April 11 @ 7 PM (French Dessert 6:30-6:50 PM)
Come gather to enjoy dessert crepes and café au laits while the Salon concept is introduced through lecture and is demonstrated through dramatic readings of epistolary literature and book exhibits. Professor Mocuta will be our guide through the enriching landscape of this French institution, the ideals of which can be examined, contemplated, and enacted in our own lives today. Guest Actors from Theatre Y, Melissa Hawkins and Kevin Smith, and Moody Actor Evan Hill will perform. Refreshments will be provided by MBI’s Catering Dept.

Pre-Release Party for The Gift – Tuesday April 12 @ 7 PM
The Gift, the second book in the Chiveis Trilogy, “continues the search for the New Testament in a world where the Bible has been lost. After the finding of an Old Testament in The Sword, The Gift picks up the story of Teo and Ana. Exiled from their homeland and trying to survive in unknown and dangerous lands, they search for any record of the missing Testament.” Come to the Crowell Library’s pre-release party to learn more about the second installment to Professor Litfin’s adventure story. Professor de Rosset will interview him about the book, after which he will read a portion of the story to those in attendance.

Attendees will be eligible to purchase a pre-release copy of The Gift (publication date is April 30), which Professor Litfin can personalize for you at the end of the program. Staff from LifeWay will be selling a limited amount of copies at the event.

Italian-inspired refreshments will be provided by MBI’s Catering Dept.

Litfin draws his sword

Coffee, iced water on a warm day, grapes, oranges, apple-pie-strudel, cheese-balls and crackers; all found in the library on Tuesday the 13th at 7p.m. Why you may ask? The library had a reason to celebrate. The week of April 13th was national Library week and so we decided to throw a little party with the celebration of the recent publication of Brian Litfin’s first novel: The Sword.

The library is usually known for its endless hours of studying, mountains of books, and writing of papers. However, we do like to mix things up once in awhile. We wanted to give the students a break; for them to be able to use the library for something other than studying.

The lights were dimmed and there was enough seating for the 100-120 students that showed up for the event.
There was a light buzz in the room as students grabbed snacks and chatted as they awaited the arrival of one of their beloved professors. Surrounded by endless shelves of books, aspiring writers and lovers of fiction couldn’t help but be inspired. Litfin is known for his love of castles and chivalry and made a grand entrance by drawing one of his swords at the beginning of the interview.

Professor Litfin is as Dr. de Rosset puts it, “One of the most qualified professors at Moody.” He has the ability to write many scholarly books, but he has chosen to write a novel, leaning more towards fantasy than anything else. The interview was completely light-hearted, full of jokes and teasing, for example Dr. de Rosset said, “Well my golden years are over,” to which Litfin replied, “You’re always golden in my books.” Of course there was a round of “ahhhhhh’s in the building, and this was how the interview began.

They discussed the process of the book, going from publisher to publisher to trying have someone buy it. That for Litfin was a greater test of faith and personality than writing the book. He said he had to trust that this was what God wanted for him and so it would happen. He didn’t “find himself” while writing the book, but more while trying to get it published.

At the end of the interview Litfin showed a brief power-point background of his novel. This also did not go without giggles as he used some of his typical nuances from his classes, “the no, no, yes slides.” He then read one of the scenes from the book, which gave students a mouth-watering taste for the book. It helped to have Litfin read his story as it really made it come alive; he was excited about it, which made the students excited about it.

The evening ended with students being able to purchase books and have them signed by Litfin, he autographed most with personal messages, rather than just his signature. Who knows those are first edition signed books, in a couple of years they could be worth hundreds!
Keep an eye out for other events the library puts on, it is all about books, but that’s not always a bad thing!

Welcome New and Returning Students!!

Welcome back! We opened yesterday, August 19th, and are so excited to have students and faculty using our space and resources.

Just a heads-up: we have new security gates that require the use of a fob to gain entry. The gates were purchased a couple of years ago in response to laptops being stolen.

We have two exhibits this fall. The first is already open for viewing. Go to the lower level to check out the Archives display showcasing the impact of the Moody Institute of Science Sermons from Science ministry. Our second exhibit will be launched in September and will be of Marianne Bach's photography of Italy. Stay tuned for details....
